The PhD Coach Kit

Doing a PhD is challenging for many reasons and having a coach in your back pocket throughout this journey can be a real lifesaver.
While this kit won’t magically transform us into coaches or solve all our problems overnight, it can help us ask the right questions. With 10 topics and 80 reflective questions, the PhD Coach Kit offers a simple way to reflect on our PhD experience individually or in a group.

Lara Solms

Lara works as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Amsterdam. In her PhD project, Lara focused on the effectiveness of coaching for medical professionals and the psychological mechanisms that underlie positive coaching outcomes. This research seeked to inform healthcare professionals (and others) about the benefits that coaching can have for their personal and professional development. Lara’s current research projects focus on understanding the coaching process (how does coaching work?) and boundary conditions (when and for whom does it work?) of effective coaching. Lara is also actively involved in valorization activities. She is member of the scientific committee of the Nederlandse Orde van Beroepscoaches (NOBCO), editorial member of Tijdschrift voor Coaching, and has co-founded the podcast PhD Unplugged to help promote PhD student well-being.

Luisa Solms

Luisa is a final-year PhD candidate at the Department of Work and Organizational Psychology at the University of Amsterdam. The well-being and personal development of PhD candidates are central themes in her research. Which factors determine PhD candidates’ well-being? What resources help PhD candidates to navigate their PhD? What are effective interventions that can promote PhD candidates well-being? Next to conducting research, Luisa is passionate about its application in practice. Together with her sister, she co-created the podcast PhD Unpluggedas a means to offer accessible and easy-to-use support to PhD candidates. In PhD Unplugged, PhD candidates share their experience ‘unplugged’, and reflect on common challenges together with a professional coach. By translating her research into creative outputs, Luisa makes her work more meaningful and joyful.
